Illustration B Day: Creativity Day 1

Bell Ringer:

Go over the slideshow above, read through the steps below, and look at the examples as well. It may be easiest to come in during Plus time or after school to complete these workshops or parts of them if you are absent.

Materials Used:

Strip of paper/Scrap paper

Value Scale

1/2 sheet of Construction Paper

Pencil

3 Different Colored Pencils

Markers

Pens

Small Objects in Class

Each activity below was completed in a certain amount of time:

Mark Making:

Use the pencil, pen, colored pencils, and markers to make as many different marks as possible on the scrap of paper

Time: 1 Minute

Value Scale:

On the first value scale, fill each box with a different mark that you made on your scrap piece of paper. Your scale should still move from dark to light even though you will use different marks to fill each box. If you squint, it can help you see which areas look the same, and which areas need to be lighter or darker. Even though you're using different marks, the value shift should still be gradual.

On the second value scale, pick one mark to make continuously. Gradually shift the value from dark to light with the one mark. It should almost have an ombre effect

Time: 6 minutes

Value Drawing:

1/2 sheet of construction paper

3 different colored pencils

Small object

Decide which color will be your lightest value and which color will be your darkest value, then decide what will be your second lightest value, and second darkest value. Decide on your midtown as well. The color of your paper should act as a value. Label it on your paper accordingly. This is a practice in abstracting an image with value and color. Look at the object in front of you. Identify where the lightest/lighter values are and the darkest/darker values are. They will form different shapes. Draw those shapes on your paper according to the colors you decided on. Fill those shapes in with those colors. You drawing should come to life as you add your shapes of value. Try to fill the page.

Log into Google Classroom and complete the Mood Board assignment.

Chris Buzelli:

Look at the images on the slideshow at the top of Chris Buzelli's illustrations. Chris Buzelli is a contemporary editorial illustrator. He has a distinct style and often incorporated nature, animals, and people into his work. He does a lot of illustrations for financial magazines. These articles aren't always the most exciting, but he has to create engaging and interesting illustrations to accompany them so people will be more likely to read them. He finds ways to incorporate the things he likes to draw or the things he loves into his illustrations, like animals.

Advancements in Technology:

Flip your construction paper over. Look at the slide (#8) that has different topics about technology. Pick on and write it at the top of your paper. If you choose your own, write what the topic is. Continue to the next slide.

Create an artwork:

Just like Chris Buzelli, you’ve been given a topic (advancements in technology) that maybe you’re not super stoked about, but maybe you are. Use your moodboard to help you incorporate things you do enjoy into your artwork.

Requirements: You must use something from your moodboard, one of the materials you experimented with today, and the topic above to create your artwork. They need to reinforce or help each other to be successful. You have until the end of class.

Time: 10-15 minutes

Staple all of your papers and exercises together and turn them into the box.
