B Day: Value Workshop

Bell Ringer:

Things you'll need:

Plain white piece of paper

Clementine or Mandarin Orange

1. Fold your paper in half

2. WRITE YOUR NAME

3. Trace this hand onto the top half of your paper

4. Draw a circle (take up the majority of the half) on the bottom half of your paper

5. Go through the first 3 slides of this slideshow

6. On the circle you drew, add value like you see on the 2nd and 3rd slides.

7. Label the circle/sphere you drew like slide 2: highlight, mid tone, core shadow, reflected light, cast shadow

**The highlight should be the lightest part of your object. The mid tone is the second lightest value on your object. The core shadow is darker than the midtone AND reflected light. It will almost look like an edge between the midtone and reflected light. On a sphere it usually looks like a darker band. Even though it's on the bottom of the sphere or an object the reflected line is light than the core shadow, but slightly darker than the midtone. Reflected light is lighter because the light on the object reflects off the surface around the objects and hits the underside of it. The cast shadow, especially right next to the object will be the darkest area on your drawing.

8.Flip your paper over. Set your clementine on the top half of your paper so you can see the light and shadows better.

9. On the bottom half of your paper, sketch your clementine. Do not trace it. Look for the 5 different values. You may have multiple highlights and shadows. You will know you are successful when you drawing looks like the orange you are referencing.

10. Read the 4th & 5th slides.

11. Make adjustments to your drawing

12. Read the rest of the slides.

13. Flip your paper back over.

14. Identify and draw where the different planes of the hand are; it should look something like the examples on slide 8.

15. Refer to this hand when you're drawing.

16. Once you have the planes identified and sketched in, start to add value. Remember to squint!
